ANCHORAGE, AK — Identity, Inc., Alaska’s LGBTQIA2S+ health provider, is raising alarm about a recent letter from the Alaska State Medical Board that urges legislators to restrict medical care for transgender adolescents. The letter, issued without clinical consultation or legal authority, signals a growing political campaign to interfere in family healthcare decisions and stigmatize transgender youth.
“Let’s be clear: this is not a debate about science—it’s about control,” said Dr. Tracey Wiese, Clinical Director of Identity. “As a medical provider, I support pediatric gender-affirming care as an evidence-based, medically necessary approach. This individualized approach is guided by clinical standards of care and supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Endocrine Society, and the American Medical Association.
When delivered in collaboration with families, this care improves mental health and overall well-being. It’s rooted in professional guidelines and best practices. And in my clinic, it’s already saving lives.”
Identity currently provides care for over 1,700 Alaskans. Our care model is legally sound, clinically aligned with national standards, and built around informed consent and family collaboration. Yet providers are increasingly operating under legal ambiguity, emotional strain, and concern for both personal and professional safety amid growing political retaliation.
The State Medical Board is composed of political appointees selected by the Governor—including members with no clinical expertise. When bodies like this are used to advance ideology, it undermines public trust and threatens the ability of families to make informed healthcare decisions for their kids.
“I didn’t need protection from my identity, especially within my culture,” said Tafi, an adult patient at Identity. “If this care had existed for me as a youth, I believe that most of the challenging personal life experiences would have been avoided.”
Identity is calling on leaders and the public to recognize what’s at stake: the freedom for families and youth to access the care they need, without political interference.
